The 2016 Queer Sci Fi Flash Fiction anthology, "Flight", is here, and I have a story in it! It's a really cool concept: A 300-word story should be easy, right? Heart pounding, chest heaving, Xes ran fast and hard on short, stubby legs. His parents looked behind them when he cried out in fear at a sudden explosion. The ground shook and he looked up to see something streak above him before the night sky flared an angry red. His baby brother let out a scream of terror and his father rushed to reassure him.
Xes looked at the five royal bodyguards with them but the ground shook again. Being so little, he stumbled, tripping over his own feet. He grunted, bit the inside of his mouth and tasted blood when his right knee slammed onto the ground. A muscled arm went around his waist to lift him. He anchored himself round his birth father's neck and waist as they continued their flight for their escape pod. Another explosion and this time his birth father lost his balance. One of the bodyguards reached out and dragged them up.
